Philosophy

The Masters in Creative Digital Media will provide candidates from a wide spectrum of disparate disciplines with a thorough grounding in the particular theoretical, technical and practical knowledge base as well as the critical acumen to enable them to:

Creative Media
Comprehend the fundamentals involved in the creation of various kinds of digital media assets (i.e. still and moving images, sound, etc.)  for deployment in a range of modes of digital display formats (i.e. web, DVD, dedicated interactive systems, info kiosk, 3G telephony, mobile, gaming platforms.).

Adopt a ‘reasoned’ approach to ‘design’ (i.e. interface, architectonic, graphic, etc.) based upon specific user requirements and best practices.

Develop management skills and rationales for project cycles.
Evaluate project processes, performance and results in the light of established criteria and thereby be able to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as postulate improvements to those components.

Focus on a particular medium (i.e. specialization by themes) whilst also being conversant with issues and technologies in complimentary digital media disciplines other than their specialization.

Contribute to both their area of specialization and creative digital media production and the critique of those processes and products.

Create, for prospective employers, a portfolio of both digital media assets/applications and attendant reports from assignments undertaken in module and major projects.

Digital Games
Digital games comprise a large and fast-growing part of the global entertainment industry. This new masters programme will prepare graduates to become innovators in this exciting field. It provides a multi-disciplinary and well-rounded education in game conception, design and manufacture, uniquely building on the combined expertise of the Digital Media Centre, and the Schools of Media and Computer Science.

This masters programme which was merged with the masters in creative digital media in 2011 provides a thorough grounding in the core skills and knowledge of digital media & gaming technologies and offers specialist production techniques dedicated to the specific needs of the games industry.  The course is designed to advance students’ employment potential and addresses the specific needs of employment in the various game development industries particularly focusing on the independent game developer and new gaming platforms.
